This is a very sad story. Actress Natasha Richardson goes skiing, takes a lesson, is with an instructor on a beginner run, falls, and hits her head on something (not specified). She gets up, seems fine, is talking and joking, but the ski patrol ship her off to the hospital. Apparently SOP. Except she died.
NEW YORK (CNN) — Natasha Richardson, a film star, Tony-winning stage actress and a member of the famed Redgrave acting family, has died. She was 45.
Richardson died after suffering injuries in a fall on a ski slope at a Quebec resort about 80 miles northwest of Montreal.
According to a statement from the resort, Station Mont Tremblant, Richardson fell on a beginners’ trail Monday during a lesson.
At the time, Richardson was accompanied by a ski instructor, who called the ski patrol, the statement said. “She did not show any visible sign of injury, but the ski patrol followed strict procedures and brought her back to the bottom of the slope and insisted she should see a doctor.”
Richardson, accompanied by the instructor, returned to her hotel, but about an hour after the fall, was “not feeling good,” the statement said. An ambulance was called, and Richardson was taken to a local hospital before she was transferred to Hopital du Sacre-Coeur in Montreal.
Like so many things in life, I am of two minds here. On the one side, I firmly and resolutely believe that you should have the right to make a choice. If you’re an adult, and you don’t want to wear a helmet, don’t want to buckle your seat belt, want to eat red meat, want to own a gun, you should be able to. If you’re a minor, I have a different opinion.
On the other side, I personally believe in training, practice, proficiency, and ATGATT. So while I defend and respect your right to choose, I have three words for you: WEAR A HELMET. Your melon is a fragile thing. Treat it like it matters.
