I can’t believe I didn’t think of this. Actually, I can, but Fast3r such an elegant idea. Not everything lends itself to the glories and wonders of web 2.0. I hate it when people say, “And I know from experience.” But I do having spent the better part of 18 months and $1.5mm dollars (that’s million) trying to develop a web 2.0 business.
“Kids” make it work on mySpace and Facebook largely because of the urge to a) hook-up, b) share the silliest details of their lives in silly detail, c) hook-up. The overlords of Silicon Valley have been pouring money into “Facebook for Geriatrics,” or “mySpace for Dentists,” or the equivalent for all sorts of groups, real or imagined (the current graveyard where venture capital goes to die is “boomers”) for the past two years with little to show for it.
I think there are lots of reasons why web 2.0 isn’t scaling in the way people thought (and if you don’t follow this sort of thing, I’ll be brief). The nub of it is in how people identify themselves. I am a boomer, but that’s not a useful thought, a useful filter, when I go looking for content. I am also a parent. That’s a little more helpful I suppose, and indeed, there is wonderful web 2.0 type of content out there for parents.
Ahhhh, but people’s hobbies. That’s where the action is. I may be a lot of things, but I perk up at nearly anything to do with motorcycles, even if it’s not a brand or type of bike I fancy (cruisers, yawn). So getting to the point of the post here, I stumbled upon (a right and proper web 2.0 activity) a site that’s just broken cover called Fast3r.
